SKU: CCD6
Inevitably glass will drip down the sides of the crucible. When molten glass comes in contact with the kiln fire brick, it will slowly eat away the brick. Even coating the bottom of the kiln with kiln wash or covering with fiber paper will not help much. A good way to protect the bottom of the kiln is by placing as large as possible kiln shelf underneath the crucible to catch the flowing glass or better yet, set the smaller sized crucible on top of a crucible catch dish shown in the picture (listed above). It can take the high temperatures you will be firing to. The two will "bond" together with the dripped glass, which is OK. Eventually all crucibles break and if it is full, it will flood the bottom of the kiln and you will have to replace the bottom bricks. Unfortunately this is just normal maintenance for crucible kilns.
